Why your alarm wakes them
An alarm sound fills the room, not just your side of the bed. If your partner is the lighter sleeper, or your schedules differ, the person who doesn’t need to be up often hears it first. The options below either remove the sound, move it onto your body, or pick a sound that reaches you more than them.
Option 1: iPhone vibrate-only alarm
- Open Clock → Alarms and tap your alarm (or +).
- Tap Sound, then Haptics, and pick a vibration pattern.
- Back in Sound, choose None at the bottom of the tone list.
The catch: vibration may be too subtle to wake you, and it can be audible on a hard bedside surface. Test it in your actual setup. Apple’s alarm guide covers the Sound and Haptics settings. Full walkthrough and troubleshooting: how to set a vibrate-only iPhone alarm.
Option 2: Apple Watch or fitness tracker haptic alarm
If you wear an Apple Watch to bed, its built-in alarms can tap your wrist. Enable Silent Mode and leave “Break Through Silent Mode” off if that option is shown. For other trackers, check the alarm instructions for your exact model.
The catch: you have to wear it and keep it charged overnight. If that is already your routine, this may be a good fit. No watch? See phone-only options without a smartwatch.
Option 3: Headphone or earbud alarm
Some dedicated apps, such as Silent Wake, advertise a headphone alarm mode.
The catch: you sleep in earbuds, and Apple notes in its alarm guide that the built-in Clock alarm also plays through the iPhone’s speakers when headphones are connected, and Couples Alarm plays through the speaker too—so earbuds are not a private route by default. Test it before relying on it.
Option 4: Vibrating wrist bands
A dedicated vibrating alarm band uses a buzz on your wrist as its wake-up signal. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the model you are considering.
The catch: it’s another device to buy, wear and charge. Test whether its vibration wakes you and whether your partner notices it.
Option 5: Couples Alarm — a tone only you hear, and it rings like a built-in iPhone alarm, even on silent
Couples Alarm is an iPhone alarm utility for two people who hear tones differently. It only suggests a bundled tone when the person waking first can hear a tested tone the other partner does not. No wearable required.
- Choose who needs to wake first for this schedule.
- Each partner completes one guided listening turn.
- If the first comparison is close or unclear, both complete one confirmation turn.
- Preview the suggested tone together and run the real bedside alarm check.
- Both partners confirm before scheduling anything.
Couples Alarm schedules its alarms with Apple’s AlarmKit, so they ring like a built-in iPhone alarm, even on silent. If the requested schedule has no suitable bundled tone, the app says so—keep using an alarm you trust for that schedule.
Partner responses and alarms stay on the iPhone. No account or backend is required. Requires iOS 26 or later. Setup and the real fit check are free; completing setup starts one calendar month of full access, followed by a $9.99 one-time purchase for continued full access—not a subscription.

Keep the boundaries clear
- Nothing here is a hearing assessment, sleep treatment, or relationship advice.
- No phone, watch, band, or app setup guarantees that one person will wake or the other will stay asleep.
- Keep a trusted backup alarm for important mornings until you have tested the exact setup where you sleep.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set an alarm that won't wake my partner?
Use a vibration-only alarm, a watch or band on your wrist, or a sound your partner is less likely to hear. Couples Alarm helps you test tones together to find one.
Will my iPhone alarm vibrate if the sound is set to None?
Yes, if a haptic pattern is selected under Sound → Haptics for that alarm.
Does an Apple Watch alarm wake only me?
Enable Silent Mode and leave Break Through Silent Mode off if it is shown. The watch can then tap your wrist; test whether this wakes you and whether your partner notices it.
Do alarm apps ring when my iPhone is on silent?
Apple’s built-in Clock alarm does. Other apps vary by app and permissions; Couples Alarm uses Apple’s AlarmKit, so its alarms ring like a built-in iPhone alarm, even on silent. Test the exact app and settings you plan to use.
