Short answer

The quick version.

Open Clock → Alarms, tap the alarm time (or + for a new one), tap Sound, choose a pattern under Haptics, then choose None as the sound. Save, and test with an alarm set one minute ahead. Vibration alone is easy to sleep through, so test it where you actually sleep.

How to set a vibrate-only alarm on iPhone

  1. Open the Clock app and tap Alarms.
  2. Tap an alarm’s time to edit it, or tap + to add one.
  3. Tap Sound. Apple describes this as where you “choose a vibration, song, or ringtone.”
  4. Tap Haptics and pick a vibration pattern (anything except None).
  5. Go back to the Sound list and choose None as the sound.
  6. Save the alarm. Then set a test alarm a minute ahead and check that it vibrates.

Make a custom vibration pattern

Apple’s sounds and vibrations guide documents Create New Vibration under Haptics in Settings → Sounds & Haptics, where you tap out your own pattern. If the option appears in your alarm’s Haptics list too, a longer or more insistent pattern may be easier to notice.

Troubleshooting: the alarm doesn’t vibrate

  • Haptics is set to None. With both Sound and Haptics on None, nothing happens. Pick a pattern.
  • All vibration is turned off. Apple notes that Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Vibration turns off all vibrations on the iPhone (Apple).
  • You’re using StandBy. Apple says alarm haptics are disabled in StandBy, so a vibrate-only alarm can be silent and still (Apple).
  • The alarm only vibrates when you wanted sound. Make sure Sound isn’t set to None.

Why vibrate-only often isn’t enough

  • It’s easy to sleep through, especially if the phone isn’t touching you.
  • The phone has to be under or right next to your pillow to be felt.
  • The Clock alarm settings offer vibration patterns, not a strength control.
  • A phone buzzing on a hard nightstand can still be heard by your partner.

If that sounds familiar, compare every option in how to wake up without waking your partner, or see vibration alarm apps vs a tested tone.

Vibrate-only on Apple Watch

Apple says that to create an alarm that taps your wrist without making a sound, turn on Silent Mode on the watch; leave Break Through Silent Mode off for that alarm (Apple). The catch: you have to wear the watch and keep it charged overnight.

A better option: a tone only you hear, and it rings like a built-in iPhone alarm, even on silent

Couples Alarm is an iPhone alarm utility for two people who hear tones differently. Each partner does a short guided listening turn, and the app suggests a bundled tone only when the person waking hears it and the other partner doesn’t. If no tone fits, it says so.

It schedules alarms with Apple’s AlarmKit, so they ring like a built-in iPhone alarm, even on silent. Apple’s built-in Clock alarm also sounds in Silent mode and with Do Not Disturb on. Couples Alarm plays through the iPhone’s speaker, and Apple says the Clock alarm plays through the speakers even with headphones connected—so earbuds won’t keep either alarm private.

Partner responses and alarms stay on the iPhone. No account or backend is required. Requires iOS 26 or later. Setup and the real fit check are free; completing setup starts one calendar month of full access, followed by a $9.99 one-time purchase for continued full access—not a subscription.

Keep the boundaries clear

  • Nothing here is a hearing assessment or sleep treatment.
  • No setup guarantees that one person will wake or the other will stay asleep.
  • Keep a trusted backup alarm until you have tested the exact setup where you sleep.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my iPhone alarm vibrate only?

In Clock → Alarms, edit the alarm, tap Sound, choose a pattern under Haptics, then choose None as the sound.

Will my iPhone alarm vibrate if the sound is None?

Yes, as long as a haptic pattern is selected and vibration isn’t turned off in Accessibility. Apple notes alarm haptics are disabled in StandBy.

Can I make the iPhone alarm vibration stronger?

The Clock app offers patterns, including custom ones, but no strength setting. A longer custom pattern and keeping the phone close are the main options.

Do iPhone alarms go off on silent or Do Not Disturb?

Apple’s Clock alarm does. Other apps vary; Couples Alarm uses Apple’s AlarmKit, so its alarms ring like a built-in iPhone alarm, even on silent.

How do I set a vibrate-only alarm on Apple Watch?

Turn on Silent Mode on the watch and leave Break Through Silent Mode off for the alarm.
